Finished my Painting

Finally finished my first truly original oil painting. By that I mean I didn't do it from a picture, I set up the still life myself. Well, I did have to consult some pictures of forsythia on the internet. The only thing available to paint from life around here is snow and bare trees. I also don't want to paint en plein air in 18 degree weather. The next thing I want to do is a painting to go in my booth. My table covers are purple so maybe lilacs and silver jewelry?

Taking a Break from Jewelry

After what seemed like a long (and very hot and humid) show season and the holidays over, I wanted to take a break from making jewelry and get back to something I used to enjoy doing years ago but never got good at, painting in oils. So I've gone crazy again purchasing books and DVDs and more brushes to add to my already large collection. To ease back into it, I started with a course from Kingslan, a series of little 5x7 pictures that were fun to do and didn't take a lot of time. Three of them were painted pretty much like the originals but I totally changed the background on the pansy picture, which necessitated somewhat changing the values and colors of the flowers. The little cabin was from a picture I found on a computer wallpaper site and was an exercise in taming Thalo Green. Not 100% happy with it but everything is a learning experience. Now I'm working on an original still life that I actually set up myself. That's where my jewelry photo lights came in handy. But I still don't have the confidence to draw with paint directly on the canvas so I did trace my design on it. Next I will really tackle alla prima by trying some of the DVDs I purchased from Daniel Edmondson, at least until I have to start restocking for shows.

Another Owl

You might remember the last silver owl that I made got melted with the torch. I didn't take any chances with this one and wired him together instead. One eye is a tad lower than the other one but so is one of mine so maybe that was my unconscious mind working through my hands. :D He's made of 16 gauge square sterling silver and stands not quite 1 3/4" tall.

Wedding Earrings

I actually have been making things this year even if I got behind in posting so I'll try and get a few up. My nephew Ben got married to the lovely Brittany on July 31. This was just after he graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree so we're very proud of him. I made these earrings to go with my dress which was a pale yellow silk with a watercolor-y floral design on it. The stones pick up the colors in the dress. The frames are a little big because I changed my mind at the last minute and put different large stones in them. I lost count of how many gemstones are in these but they include hydro quartz, garnet, amethyst, mystic quartz and green onyx. Yes, they are a bit heavy but I didn't notice after a while.

Viking Knit Class

Now that shows are pretty much done for the year it's time to get caught up on my blog. I recently had a class with a fun group of gals from the Owosso Country Cub who wanted to learn to make a viking knit bangle. It was not just viking knit, it was double viking knit. In spite of some struggles I assured them that, even if it looked like a train wreck, the magic would happen when we got out the drawplate. I always love seeing how students react when they see the results of pulling the chain through the drawplate. As you can see, every single bracelet turned out beautifully.

Blogger Troubles

Anyone else having issues with Blogger? Sometime in May I bacame unable to respond to comments on my blog or edit posts. It just kept bumping me back to the Signin page. Their Help page was useless-it told me to clear my cache, make sure cookies were enabled, blah, blah. That was done and I still couldn't log in. It seems they have been aware of this problem since at least May and haven't bothered to fix it. So I decided to download Firefox. I loved it! I had no trouble with my blog, it was faster, and I had my beloved Google toolbar. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the way the Bookmarks worked. Then Firefox told me I needed to update to the new version. If I had only known. Now I can't even log into my blog, and the new version is not compatible with the Google toolbar. So I'm back to square one, having to open IE to post but not able to comment. So any of you who are commenting on my posts, please know that I do appreciate it and I'm not ignoring your comments.

Week 21-Bronze Viking Knit Necklace

The theme for this week had something to do with red. I've been involved in the campaign to recall Rick Snyder so I'm so far behind I don't remember. :D So this is a bronze single Viking knit necklace. The center decoration is wired to the chain. I pictured it in my head as bigger and blingier but I wasn't about to do it over. The centerpiece is keishi pearls with garnets in the center. The spirals are wired with black spinels that have a nystic coating. I first photographed it leaving the wire bright but later decided to oxidize it. That was a good move because that's when it sold. People seem to like patinas lately.

Week 20-Copper Tubing Necklace

Trying to play catch-up. The theme for week 20 was Three Feet of Wire and for once I managed to stick with the theme. I ran 16 gauge sterling silver wire through some 1/4" copper tubing which I then beat with a hammer. The spirals were formed and forged with a hammer. Then I spent about two hours dragging out half of my stash to try and figure out what to hang from the bottom. I finally gave up and just attached a vintage skeleton key. I've heard it said that we should charge for our design time but I think charging someone 30 bucks because I can't make up my mind is a little overboard. LOL Someone thought that the key was okay because they bought it at a show already.

Meet Bubbles

Meet Bubbles the baby groundhog. Bubbles is an orphan. Her (at least her rehabilitator thinks she's a her) mother was hit by a car and she was picked up by a nice lady and turned over to my friend. I never thought I liked groundhogs. They've burrowed underneath my pump house and created a big mess with their excavations. But this little critter is so friendly and just loves to cuddle. My dogs, as usual, were fascinated by this little thing. I once read that dogs can identify an infant of any species by their smell due to differences in blood chemistry. I don't know if that's true but they're always very gentle with these babies.

This bracelet is based on a tutorial by Arja, a talented jewelry artist from Finland. This one is made from bronze wire with blue quartz beads. She has a very clever way of creating the loops and a hidden clasp. Nice tutorial, Arja!

Week 19-Snidely Whiplash Owl Pendant

The theme for this week is "Round and round". This is something I was playing around with the other day and it comes closest to fitting the theme with it’s round belly and round eyes. It’s an inexpensive glass cabochon that I wrapped with square copper wire. Then I wired a piece of brass wire under his body to represent a branch and some feet. Where I got stumped was trying to give him a beak and some cheeks to close the gap between his body and eyeballs. I’m not happy with that part. I think he looks more diabolical than whimsical-hence the name Snidely Whiplash. LOL If anyone has a better solution, email me a sketch!

Week 18-Victorian Key in Bronze

This was made on request from my Victorian Key Pendant tutorial only with bronze wire and silver beads with amethyst gems. It's been so long since I made one I had to get out my own tutorial to do it. :D Since the bronze oxidizes a lot faster than silver, it got very dark in the crevices. I wish I knew of way to remove some of the patina from the bronze without removing it from the silver.

Company today

I had a class at my house this afternoon and you never know what kind of cuteness one of my students, who is a wildlife rehabilitator, is going to show up with. This afternoon it was a darling little orphan red fox, about 6 weeks old. It took a while for my four Boston Terriers to get the nerve to check her out. They were more afraid of her than she was of them.

Week 17-Dancing Leaf Necklace

This necklace is my version of a spectacular silver piece in Sharilynn Miller's new book Wire Art Jewelry Workshop. She calls hers the Dancing Man necklace. Since mine was constructed to showcase a gorgeous lampwork glass leaf by Jacqueline Parkes of Gems in Bloom on Etsy and I stink at thinking up clever names, I think I'll call mine Dancing Leaf necklace. :D My necklace is made of bronze wire with paraiba quartz and labradorite as the main stones. It's accented with smaller gems of paraiba quartz, iolite, pearl and chrysoprase that pick up the colors in the leaf.

Week 16-A Bit of Bollywood

Nothing too complicated for this week but I like the bright colors. I think they give these a bit of Bollywood feel. They’re made of bronze wire, purple and red hydro quartz, and peridot briolettes. I used LOS to oxidize them.

Bronze Bracelets and Patinas

I've had some questions about how to patina the phosphor bronze wire that I now carry in my Artfire shop. Here are three different Viking knit bangles that I made showing three different options. I love all of these finishes so it's really a matter of personal preference. The first one is the shiny bright wire just as it comes off the coil. I really didn't even need to run this through the tumbler.

The second bracelet with the squiggle clasp got a light patina using JAX Brown-Black Darkener although I'm sure the Midas brand that Rio carries would work the same. This solution is clear and the color develops slowly so it's possible to have much more control than with LOS. When using this type of patina it's important that your metal be well cleaned first to remove any oils that might interfere with the patina. One of my metalsmithing instructors insists on cleaning hers with a toothbrush and soap or scouring powder. But I've found that a run through the tumbler with a little dishsoap or burnishing powder does the job as well. I left this one in the solution until it got a slightly aged look, then rinsed it. I didn't use any steel wool or remove any of the patina.

The third example uses LOS which works beautifully on clean bronze. This got quite dark as you can see in the crevices and I did use 0000 steel wool to buff off some of the patina from the high spots.

Week 15-Bronze and Turquoise Earrings

I finally had a chance to sit down and actually make something with my supply of bronze wire. The lacy edging on these earrings was inspired by Yati Salem. The brios and dangles are turquoise and they're topped with a 4mm pearl. I haven't added a patina to these but I kind of like this wire shiny.

Week 14-Revisiting Keys

It just occured to me that I forgot to post Week 14! I hadn't made a new key in a while so I thought up this one using an oval faceted lemon quartz in the center. I haven't had time to oxidize it but that will probably happen.

Bronze Wire is Finally Here!

I think bronze is a grogeous metal and I've always wanted to work with it but found it difficult to find in dead soft temper and impossible to find in some gauges. So after some extensive reseach, I finally found a company who could produce what I wanted and my shipment finally arrived. I'm now offering phosphor bronze wire for jewelry makers in my Artfire shop packaged in approximately one ounce coils in gauges 14, 16, 18, 20, 24 and 26.
This wire is not brass-it's a true copper/ tin bronze alloy and it's already
annealed dead soft. The color is beautiful-not as yellow as brass and not as
red as copper, more like a rosy gold. There is more info in my shop but feel

Week 13-Complementary Colors

Most of you probably know that complementary colors are those that are opposite each other on the color wheel. The pair that I put up for Year of Jewelry are primarily andalusite but I sprinkled in some green vessuvianite and red garnets. I think of them as representing early spring when the first green shoots appear....something we're still waiting for in Michigan, although almost all of the snow is now gone. Then it occured to me that turquoise and sunstone could represent the complementary colors of blue and orange so I put together a couple of pairs and decided I really like that combination. I tend to get stuck in a rut of monochromatic so I'll think I'll pull out the color wheel more often.

Week 12-Two Feet of Wire

This weeks theme was harder to stick to than I thought it would be. You would think we would all be motivated to use less silver considering the current price. But when I finished the zigzag earrings and weighed them, I about fainted when I saw they contained about $9.50 worth of silver. In spite of that, they're very lightweight and comfortable. The copper donut pair ended up using almost 4 feet of silver wire but I like them nonetheless. The copper pair are not the lightest earrings ever so I will probably take those to shows so that people can feel the weight and decide if it's too much for them.

Week 11-Spring is Sprung Bracelet

The theme for this week is Spring Has Sprung. You couldn't tell that where I live in Michigan but hope springs eternal. This bracelet was inspired by one in Sharilyn Miller's book "Arty Jewelry". However, I wrapped the apatite and mystic quartz beads and the keishi pearls around a length of 1/4" copper tubing from Homeowner's Hell. Of course, they slid around like crazy. So to hold them in place I ran some wire through a tube wringer and wrapped it around the copper tubing to secure the beads. I added a larger copper core wire, some silver spacers domed into caps, coiled silver wire and a clasp to finish it.

Week 10-Solder Inlay and an Accidental Patina

How did I get two weeks behind? These pieces were done the same day as the etching class. I made them specifically so I would have impressions in the copper to inlay with silver solder. I found it a little tricky to get the right amount of solder in the grooves. If you get too much in, you end up with a lot of filing to do. If you don't get enough in, it's harder to get it to fill the area which is what happened in the squiggly lines pair of earrings. I moved the solder around with my pick but still didn't get it all the way to the edge in spots. The bracelet was etched with the intention of doing solder inlay on that as well. But I accidentally ended up with such a colorful patina that I didn't want to touch it. I'll describe what I did to it in case you want to try this at home but I have no idea if I can duplicate this result. For the resist I used strips of adhesive labels that were cut out with various scrapbooking scissors. Of course it went into the ferric chloride and then soaked for a few minutes in 50/50 ammonia and water. The paper came off but left a sticky residue. So I put Goo Gone on it and let it sit for a while before wiping it off. I still had some sticky residue so I then cleaned it with a soft toothbrush and Barkeeper's Friend. Rinsed it well and set it on a towel to dry. I came back later to find this rainbow of colors.

Etching Class

Saturday I had a class in copper etching at my house and I want to show off the beautiful work that some of the gals produced. I'm sorry we didn't get Maureen's photographed before she left. For this class we just used rubber stamps, Staz-On ink and Sharpie markers for the resist. From top to bottom are Rhonda and Laurie, Rhonda, Pat, Mary Ann and Bonny. Thanks to Mary Ann for taking and emailing the pics to me!

Week 9-Granulation Pendants

Last Saturday I took a great class in granulation from Debbie Fehrenbach. I had no choice but to part with some of the sterling silver sheet that I've been hoarding. We learned how to melt all of the little same size fine silver balls. They were then glued to the sterling silver sheet with a mixture of gum tragacanth, Handy Flux and blue ammonia (ammonia that copper has soaked in). When that's dry they're fused to the silver with a torch in a tricky operation where timing is everything. I had a couple of little balls come off of each one but not where it's really noticable. I added a small bezel cup to one and set in it a blue lab spinel. Debbie is a wealth of infomation and I always learn a lot in her classes. I actually finished these on Monday when I got to try out my new Knew Concept saw. I bought it hoping that I might learn to enjoy sawing. The saw is so good that there's hope that I will.

Hardware Store Earrings

I stopped at Homeowner's Hell the other day for a propane tank. I started browsing around in the hardware and came home with some fun earring components. Three of these are made with steel retaining rings. They looked a little grungy at first but a trip through the tumbler cleaned them up, and I think they look kinda cool embellished with sterling silver chain and gemstones. The round brass thingies are compression sleeves. I drilled holes in them, then added pyrite to the large ones and Swarovski pearls inside the smaller ones, connecting them to the ear wires with sterling silver chain. The pyrite ones make a fun tinkling sound when they move.

Week 8-Peruvian Pendant

This week's theme was godesses, specifically Freya, who is a Norse godess. This pendant is more suitable for an Incan godess though. It consists of a large citrine colored hydro quartz brio wrapped in a sterling silver Peruvian inspired frame. The dangling beads are iolite. I'm not feeling the color combination though. Maybe it's because I graduated from Michigan State and these are U of M colors. LOL Maybe I would like it better with amethyst. Or maybe I should oxidize it. Opinions?

I'm Loving Coral This Week

I never wear red and it's never been one of my favorite colors. But a couple of folks on the forums I belong to were destashing some red coral beads and they all of a sudden appealed to me. So I played with these beads all last weekend. With the exception of the first pair of earrings, these are all done with copper wire. I would love to pair some with silver in a necklace but I find myself being stingy with my silver wire lately. I'll have to get over that-it's not going down.

Week 7-Eni Oken Style Bracelet with Pearls

The last week has been so busy I haven’t been able to get any new pieces made. Between metalsmithing class, Euchre club, a retiree's dinner, going to Ann Arbor to see my favorite band, and the death of my best friend's mom, I couldn't get much done. One thing I did do was sort through old work and inventory. Some things got recycled for scrap, some taken apart for the components, and a few things got donated to a charity. This bracelet is a rework. I made the centerpiece of this bracelet years ago early in my wire adventures from a tutorial by Eni Oken. I orginally made the bracelet with some purple jasper beads. But I never liked the way it laid so about a year ago I took it apart and replaced them with these large pearls. Then I didn’t like the closure on it plus it was too big. So this time I made a new hook and eye closure for it. It’s a pretty huge bracelet, measuring about 2 1/8″ wide so it needs to be a little snug to keep it from flopping around. I probably could have made a fancier closure but I just wanted to be able to finally wear it after all these years. So what do you all do with your older inventory?

Week 6-Amethyst Stalactite Necklace

Here's the stalactite that I got stuck on last week. The stalactite is set in a Margo Farrin O'connor style. I had started this at metalsmithing class trying to solder all of the wires together. But I wasn't happy with my solder joints so I ended up wiring them together with half round wire. Quicker, easier and just as strong. The necklace is somewhat inspired by Emily Gray. I used amethyst and labradorite rondelles above the stalactite, and the larger rondelles holding the chain are paraiba quartz. I ended up cutting off a couple of the rice pearls after I took the pics. I'm not sure about the pearl drops on this. It's one of those things I have to look at for a while before I decide if I like it that way. The pearl drops are actually a natural lavender color although they look a little peachy in some of the pictures.

Week 5-Solar Quartz and Copper Necklace

This isn't the project that I was working on for this week. I had prong set a beautiful stalactite slice and had a vague vision of what I wanted to hang it from. So I got out the copper wire to play around and instead found myself channelling Gosia Domanska and Mary Tucker and bending little leaves in the wire. It wasn't what I had in mind for my stalactite slice so I added some green tourmaline and vessuvianite beads, and hung a cool solar quartz pear briolette from it. I'm not sure about the addition of the keishi pearls but I felt like it needed something to echo the white.

Week 4-Ayudhia Bangle

The tutorial for this bracelet is by Achmad Irfan, Borneo Pahlevi on Jewelrylessons.com. I bought this tutorial because I thought it was one of the most beautiful bracelets I'd ever seen. My plan was to make it in silver with a silver druzy center. But since there is almost an ounce of metal in this, I thought I'd better try it out in copper first and I'm so glad I did. First because my weaving needed some practice. It got better as I went along and you can tell by comparing the two sides. Secondly, the tutorial as written turned out too big for me so now I'll know to shorten it when I make it again. This one probably took me at least ten hours to make but, hopefully, it will go quicker the next time.

Assorted Earrings

I've been busy this week trying to get stuff listed in my Artfire shop and also trying to come up with some new earrings in the under $30.00 price range. The first pair are little ribbons of copper sheet that I textured, drilled and folded before adding a dangling pyrite briolette. I was happy with how they turned out.

The second pair are gorgeous seafoam green hydro quartz briolettes that I coiled and wrapped in fine silver.

Last are some impression jasper beads that I've had for ages in a simple wrap of fine silver with balled ends.

Week 3-Leather, Macrame and Silver

The theme for this week was Mixed Media so I decided to try working with leather cord. Forty years ago in college I made the obligatory macrame plant hanger but haven't done it since. Thanks to the internet I was able to refresh my memory on how to do a square knot. I started with the silver center which is a doodad that's been hanging out in my spare parts box for ages. The challenge was doing something with four cord ends on each side and the web wasn't much help there. I was able to weave a couple of them in and I used the other two to knot the clasp on. I did end up using some Duco cement to secure the knots. So far, so good.

Tourmalinated Quartz Earrings

I was trying to think of something a little bit different to do with briolettes for earrings than the standard wrap. I wanted these quartz briolettes with black toumaline needles to be fancied up a bit. These are somewhat inspired by Erin Patton's Vintage Briolette Cap but on a smaller scale. I used 24 gauge square half hard wire, 2mm beads and tiny daisy spacers for decoration. I don't know that I will try these again- the PITA factor was high.

Week 2-Aqua and Lemon Quartz Necklace and Earrings Set

The theme for this week is Eclipse so these don't really fit the theme, or I'm not up to the stretch needed to get them to fit the theme. The song Blue Moon? Nah, never mind. These earrings are not for the faint of heart. They measure 2 3/4" long and 1 1/4" wide. They're composed of aqua hydro quartz, lemon quartz, apatite, moss aquamarine and keishi pearls. The stone in the pendant is slightly larger and the pendant is about 2 1/4" long

Earrings for Donna

Last month I had a little open house at my home and Donna, one of my best customers, picked out this necklace and wanted earrings made to go with it echoing the center motif. So after much messing around this is what I ended up with. The orange beads are mystic quartz and the blue ones are iolite with little tiny pearls. I'm going to drop them off this afternoon and hope she likes them.

Week 1 2011-Etched Copper Necklace

So here is my first submission. This was a new beginning for an old etched copper rectangle that's been hanging around the house and was pretty blah on its own. So I added lots of spirals and scrolls and paraiba quartz beads in a beautiful seafoam color. Then I created a complementary spiral link chain. Like it or not, at least it's not blah any more. :D

Holiday Gifts

I hope everyone had a great holiday, whichever one you happen to celebrate. For the last couple of years, I've done a Christmas gift exchange with Deb and Sue, my two best friends from the Creative Wire Jewelry forum. I always look forward to opening those small packages on Christmas morning because I know it's going to be something special. Now that the holidays are over, I can finally post what I was working on for them. Sue's necklace and earrings use whiskey quartz gemstones. I forgot to get a picture of the necklace for Deb but hers was the same only with a turquoise briolette. Since she lives in Albuquerque (I can now spell that by heart!) I know she's a fan of turquoise. Today I'll try and get some pictures of what they made and get them posted.

Earrings for Kim

At the trunk show I did the other night, a gentleman and his daughter wanted me to make something for his other daughter, Kim. Her house was recently broken into and all of her jewelry was stolen so they wanted something special. The only direction I was given was to make them silver with pink in the middle, and feminine. I emailed a picture but I haven't heard back so I don't know if this is what they had in mind or not. When I look at them I keep wishing the bottom element was a tad smaller. What do you think?

A Couple of New Artfire Listings

I've actually gotten a number of new pieces made in the last couple of weeks but I can't post them yet because they're all Christmas presents. So I'll have to settle for posting a couple of things I'm listing in my Artfire shop. I've been saying that when silver hit $30.00 I was going to go through my jewelry boxes and turn some old stuff in for scrap. Sure enough, silver went over $30.00 the other day so I started rummaging. In addition to coming up with over a pound of old jewelry, I also ended up with lots of sterling beads, clasps and some other fun components. One of the things I ran across was an old ankle bracelet that had sections of the coolest chain. It looks like a tiny foxtail with little sections of coil inside the links. I've never seen anything like it in my internet travels. There was enough to make two simple pairs of earrings. The pendant is a rainbow moonstone from Magpie Gemstones wrapped in a loopy, beaded setting.

Pink Tourmaline, Green Amethyst and Hydro Quartz Earrings

I've always liked the way that Sheridan Joslin uses unusual color combinations of gems in her jewelry. So even though my first instinct was to use shades of pink with these rose hydro quartz carved circles, I decided to use green amethyst instead. I also added some beautiful little carved pink tourmaline leaves as well as some champagne keishi pearls. I should get out my color wheel more often.

Hollow Forms Class

I took a class from Joyce Thor through the Flint Schools recently on making hollow beads. I successfully completed a couple after discovering that paste solder is the way to go after I tired of chasing little solder chips around. The ones that I made are the copper and brass tube bead in the middle of the bracelet and the little brass lentil on the end. I wanted to make bigger ones, and I might someday, but that will involve sawing-not my favorite thing-because I couldn't get my Harbor Freight disc cutter to cut larger circles from 22 gauge brass sheet, even after annealing. So after lots of pounding, I settled for making three of the little brass lentils. It was fun but I think this will remain one of those things that it's more cost efficient to buy unless you're got a super high end clientele.

Fold Formed Copper Leaf Earrings

Thursday was our last week of metalsmithing class for the year. I try to do things there that I can't do at home due to lack of equipment. One thing I lack is a good vice. Well, it's not like I don't have vices, just not one that will hold metal. :D So I did the folding and hammering on these earrings at class. At home I was able to cut them out and stamp the edges to give them a ripple effect. I really like the way these turned out and I might have to ask Santa Claus for a vice.

Ornate Key Pendant

Continuing my fascination with old keys, I'm trying to get them smaller and smaller. This new one is about 2". For this one I used an 8mm CZ in a snapset and 22 gauge square wire. I think I'm going to try it again in round wire. M
It still needs some work but maybe I can get it to the point where it would make a good tutorial. And next time I'll remember to remove the Sharpie marks before I take the pictures. :D

Another Attempt at the Swirly Stuff

Here's my latest so-so attempt to get the hang of this swirly whorly stuff. On a good day the wire should look like it's flowing naturally but I miss the mark on that most days. Now that silver is predicted to hit $100.00 an ounce in the next year, I think I'll start practicing this in copper. The stone is a big hydro quartz in a madeira citrine color.

The Broken Wing Owl Repair

Remember the owl that I was working on a few weeks ago when I carelessly melted part of his wing off with the torch? I got him out to mess around with the other day along with some thin brass wire and a tourmaline carved leaf and this is what resulted. I guess it's growing on me but I'm still not sure if I'm satisfied with it. What do you think? This can at least be easiliy removed and I could still attempt to solder a patch in there.

I haven't been very motivated to challenge myself lately so I made a couple of fairly simple necklaces. The circles are fine silver wire that has been balled up at the ends with a torch. For one, I wove the circles togther with some smaller wire and oxidized it.

Week 40-Lapis Necklace

You know I really want to be Iza Malczyk when I grow up even though I'm already old enough to be her mother. :D So this is my latest attempt. The big stone is a 25mm lapis. The small rondelles are blue iolite and I added a pyrite because the lapis has pyrite inclusions. I had a really hard time getting both sides the same, and I had wanted two wires to meet at the bottom but I obviously got them too short. I tried a couple of different ways of attaching the chain and I'm still not satisfied with that part of it but that can be changed if anyone has a better idea.

Week 39-Don't Torch When You're Tired

I started this little owl guy last Thurusday at metalsmithing class. He was turning out so cute but he had one solder joint that didn't take. So I went back to the torch to resolder it and....oops. I melted part of his wing off. The moral of the story is don't solder if you're tired, in a hurry, or not too familiar with acetylene torches. LOL So now I need to figure out what I should do with him. I could try to solder another piece of wire in there. Or I could make a smaller branch out of brass wire and cover that part up with a leaf. Or I have some little carved tourmaline leaves that I could use. Opinions?

My favorite stone, labradorite. This one is set in a netted bezel and attached to two 18 gauge wires woven together and then intertwined. What a PITA. I stuggled to get both sides even and I'm still not sure they are.

Week 37-Some Etching

I did some copper etching last week. The earrings were inspired by Cindy Wimmer's necklace in the last Step By Step Wire. They're not for the faint of heart measuring about 2 7/8" long. The skyline bangle is 1 1/2" wide and was done with a stamp and Staz-on ink which I then went over with a Sharpie. The waves bangle is 1" wide and also used a stamp for the design.

Week 36-Silver Tassel Pendant

This pendant was inspired by Lynne Merchant, an artist who has probably been an inspiration for most of the wire jewelry makers of today. I've always admired her beautiful tassels and challenged myself to try something similar. I did solder the largest outside ring that the loops and dangles hang from. The top part is a spiral which I thought I would do in a manner similar to Iza's bead cap. But I was trying to do it from memory having only done it once years ago and just couldn't wrap my head around the weave. Plus I don't think I really had enough spirals to do it effectively. So all I can say is it's held together. :D Now if I just had Mary Tucker's stick-to-itiveness, I would work on this until it's perfect. But making one wore me out. LOL

New Tutorial-Crowned Jewel Pendant

I promised someone I would do a tutorial for this pendant and, being the procrastinator that I am, it only took me a year to get it done. I designed it as a way to showcase some lovely lampwork focal beads that I had. Every one will be unique depending on your choice of materials. I included two pages of instructions on coiling with a drill, including how to make your own mandrel, as well as some other tips and timesaving techniques. I have it listed in my both my Etsy and Artfire shops.

Week 35-Woven CZ Rings

I made some of these rings a few years ago and I've been wearing the last one almost daily for about three years until someone bought it off my finger in Brighton. I missed it and had to make myself a replacement as well as some to sell. The basis of this ring is a tutorial from Kingfisher Designs. I used three 18 gauge round wires instead of the two 20 gauge square wires in the tutorial, as well as using a bigger stone. I also changed the weaving to the pattern used in Iza Malczyk's cross tutorial. I love these rings because they're big and bold but also comfortable to wear. But now I can't decide whether to oxidize them all or not. Opinions?

The Tomato Eater

At the age of 10 1/2 my little Wizard has decided he likes tomatoes. Every time I go out to water the patio garden, he has to pick himself a tomato. I can't just give him one. He checks out the plants, decides which one he wants, and picks it of the vine. It has to be ripe and it has to be bigger than he can eat.

I found a source for some really nice labradorite-my favorite stone-at the G&LW Show last month. I set this one in a Viking knit bezel accented with some coils of tiny wire. I had it for two days. I made it on Thursday and it sold on Saturday. :D

Week 31-Bouquet Plume Agate Pendant

I bought this bouquet plume agate cabochon from Stones That Rock at www.cabochon.ws along with several others equally as gorgeous. I didn't want to use the traditional cab wrap or anything that would detract from the stone so I tried my hand at a woven bezel. When I started I had no real plan as to how I was going to secure the stone in the bezel from the back. I though about netting it in but I was able to figure out a way to use the two back bail wires that looks good and seems to be secure.

I had some requests to see the back of this so here it is. As you can see I ran a little short of wire or I would have made larger spirals on the back. But that's what happens when you don't have a plan. :D

Week 30-Copper and Crystal Necklace

This is another flower motif necklace. I don't use crystals much but I thought this needed a shot of color and sparkle. It's a fairly large pendant-1 1/2" wide and over 4" long-so I put it on a 30" chain.

Week 29-Copper and Sunstone Scroll Earrings

It seems I've been in a bit of a slump the last couple of weeks and all I've accomplished is one pair of earrings. The metal is copper and the really sparkly sunstone briolettes are another one of my finds from the G&LW Show. I'm going to start describing these as "scroll", unless someone can come up with a better description, because of Google. If you want your products included in Google's Product Search, you have to learn which words they'll reject. One of the words they won't accept is "vine" along with just about any of the words used to describe different colors of quartz, such as "champagne", "whiskey", "cognac" and "beer". "Free" is another no-no word. So if you want to offer free shipping, or free gift wrap, be sure and refer to it as "complimentary". :D

Week 28-Another Copper Bangle

This bracelet was made from some more cool beads that I picked up at the G&LW show. They started out with a pretty torched patina on them which I, of course, ruined when I dunked the whole thing in liver of sulfur. I haven't made bangles in a while and forgot how long to make them, so this one was a little big for my wrist, hence the short clasp (or I was just too lazy to fix it).

My friend, Rodene, and I went to the Gem and Lapidary Wholesaler's show in Livonia last Friday. Let me tell you, that was an exercise in self restraint. Although I hadn't yet worked in brass, I fell in love with this Tibetan naga shell bead and the diamond cut brass beads and even better, they were in my budget. This turned out a little small for my wrist hence the longish clasp. I'm still trying to decide whether to age the brass on this or not. Opinions?

I'm two weeks behind but I've had four shows in the last five weeks so I've been restocking but haven't had much time to create anything new. Last weekend was a three day show in Northville. It was beastly hot and humid but Northville is a pretty town and the people were extremely nice. Sunday was shaping up to be a really good day until the tornado sirens went off and many vendors started frantically packing up their wares. Since there is no way I can tear down in under an hour anyway, I decided to hang in for a while. No tornado materialized but we did get thunderstorms. By then most of the vendors were closed so I had to admit it was over. That's Michigan for you.

Anyway last week I decided to do extreme housekeeping, for a change. While sorting through old magazines, I ran across a picture of a Prada handbag in a 2008 issue of Elle. The strap on that bag was the inspiration for this bracelet.

Week 23-Silver Flower Necklaces

In working on a prototype for a new key tutorial, I ended up with several of these flower motifs in various sizes. The flower shape itself was inspired by Lisa Racine of Julida Designs, an artist whose work I really enjoy. I was trying to achieve one that was about an inch in diameter. Because the size of the flower is dependent on the diameter of the plier jaws where you form them, and there is no way to know in advance exactly how big they're going to turn out, I had to do some experimenting to get one the right size. Rather than consign the extras to the scrap box, I added beads and coiling and chains and ended up with two pretty cool necklaces. Even though I'm still not anywhere close to getting my key prototype done, at least I consider it was a productive day.

World's Largest Underpants

I did the art and craft show at the Alma Highland Festival this weekend. My dad, age 87, was the oldest veteran marching in the parade. You rock, Dad! It was very hot but there was a great crowd and I did almost double what I did last year which was very encouraging. I hope the rest of the summer follows the same trend for all of us. My next door neighbor was Crystal Wilson, a talented tie-dye artist. I'm old enough to remember doing tie-dye back in the sixties but Crystal has taken tie-dye to a whole new level. The most fun I had all weekend was hearing people's reactions to her size 100 tie-dyed underpants. If you can't live without a pair of these giant undies, you can contact Crystal at (989) 875-6175.

Week 22-Pink Opal and Tourmaline Earrings

These I'm pretty happy with even if I don't wear pink. I still think it's a beautiful, feminine color. The drops are some large pink opals that I got when Rodene and I road tripped to Munro's last week. I added rose quartz, moonstone, pink tourmaline and some creamy gold keishi pearls (also from Munro's). I like the way the coiled earwires turned out and they're closed at the top so nothing can work it's way off. I'm caught up for now. I'm leaving tomorrow for Alma and the Highland Festival. My whole family will be there for the weekend so I should have lots of help at the art fair even if I don't get to see any of the festival. Wishing everyone a safe and great holiday weekend.

Week 21-Garnet Bracelet

This is another piece that I'm not too sure about. The clasp began life as a failed earring compoment and ended up in my spare parts box. The string of garnet beads definately needed something ornate with it so I pulled out the earring and turned it into a clasp. I like the idea but I'm not sure I like the shape.

The second one uses Greek Mykonos ceramic beads, and the third one has a giant heavy Bali bead that I picked up somewhere in my travels and could never figure out what to do with.

I felt the need to make another citrine bracelet after last week's didn't turn out as expected. I bought these citrines from Beadifferent in Oxford, MI, and I ran them through the tumbler for a long time and they came out perfectly. These were too dark to use with the pale aquamarine beads so I paired them with sunny yellow 14mm shell pearls.

Week 18-Aquamarine and Citrine??? Bracelet

This bracelet turned into a disappointment. I thought it was really pretty when I made it. I used big round aquamarine beads and soft yellow faceted citrines along with the spiral links that I hand forged and soldered. The colors were summery and reminded me of sun and sky. Then I put it in the tumbler. When it came out I dismayed to find that the citrines had lost all their color. They were dyed! I wrote to the supplier and he confirmed that the citrines were very pale so they lightly dyed them. I told him that citrines listed as AA+ quality would be heat treated, but they shouldn't be dyed. So now I don't know if I should remake this with natural clear quartz, or just tell people that the beads are very, very pale quartz since citrine is a form of quartz. Or tell them it's citrine with no color. GRRR.

Week 17-Kazuri Bead and Pyrite Bracelet

I really like using Kazuri beads in my work. They're not only beautiful but the factory in Kenya provides good wages, child care, and health care to disadvantaged women and individuals with special needs. I've combined these with double rows of faceted pyrite beads and oxidized the sterling silver.

Week 16-Labradorite Vine Necklace

I've had this gorgeous labradorite pendant that I got from Szarka at Magpie Gemstones for a while waiting for a project to come to mind. This labradorite has tons of blue chatoyancy so I combined it with apatite rondelle beads and little green amethyst faceted rounds. I struggled with attaching the coiled vine and I'm not 100% happy with the way the wrap wires are showing but maybe I can talk myself into believing that it adds an organic element to the necklace.

Since I'm already overrun with earrings, I naturally decided to make more. My friend, Deborah Gray-Wurz, procured some gorgeous pyrite briolettes for me and I used them in the first pair of earrings. I also added gems in shades of purple and violet including tanzanite, amethyst and iolite.

The second pair is olive jade with cascades of green vessuvianite, blue aquamarine and some some keishi pearls thrown into the mix.

Lately rice-shaped beads have really been appealing to me. I don't usually wear pink but I bought a really cute dark pink top from Anthropologie and it really needed something bold to fill in the neckline. These beads are from Limabeads and they're dyed crazy lace agate. The shape of the links was inspired by a reproduction of an antique necklace that I saw in a museum catalog once upon a time. I made the headpins by hammering the ends of 22 gauge wire.

I Had Company Today

I had a class at my house this afternoon and, fortunately, as I have a houseful of dogs, all the gals are animal lovers. But Yvonne is also involved with wildlife rescue and she brought along these two adorable orphaned baby squirrels. They're four weeks old and still on formula so they had a feeding while they were here. The rest of the time they love to snuggle in their blanket or in the palm of your hand. I want one although I would probably have a hard time releasing it back into the wild.

This is the third project we completed in a series of classes I did for the Flint Schools. This is the bangle that I posted for Week 9 if you want to see additional pictures. The only thing I did that wasn't in the tutorial was wire a bead on either side of the focal bead to kind of fill that space. You could also put a small bead directly on the core wire if it has a bid enough hole. I used some 26 wire for this and ran the wire behind the bead a couple of times to keep it from spinning. I hope you enjoy trying this out.

I've had this big honking rock crystal quartz briolette for awhile, and when I say big I mean it's 1 1/8" tall by 3/4" wide. I suppose I could have just wrapped it and put it on a chain but noooo, I had to try and get fancy with it. Maybe the folks who are so good at these vining type settings can visualize them in their head but I can't. So I just grab wire and start twirling it. The fact that it was 16 gauge wire didn't make it any easier and I actually had to anneal it a couple of times while I was messing around with it. I ended up with some awkward looking spaces in the middle, hence the pearls. I'm still undecided about this one. Maybe it will grow on me.

The third and final project was a woven bangle bracelet and this is the bracelet I made in the class. 16 and 26 gauge copper wire with a lampwork lentil bead.

Week 7-Vine Necklaces

I'm a huge fan of Gosia Domanshiej and her work was the inspiration for my attempt at making this vining pendant out of copper. I liked it enough to add some silver beads and chain, and a green CZ drop. So the next one I did in fine silver and I took it a bit farther-maybe too far. The briolette on the bottom is pink anethyst. I then added some spinel rondelles in various shades of pink and lilac. Next I might attempt a pair of earrings. Getting them to match will be a challenge.

I've been raiding my spare parts box again. I'm fortunate that there is a very talented metalmsith and jewelry artist, Debbie Fehrenbach, who teaches occasional workshops in my area. Last year I took a fold forming class from Debbie and the first thing I tried was a couple of fold formed and corrugated copper leaf shapes. In keeping with my resolution (that I only occasionally follow) to use the supplies that I have and quit buying new ones, I got these out the other day, trimmed them up to match, oxidized them and wired pearls to them. I really like them but as soon as I finished them, I was kicking myself for not using oxidized silver wire instead. On the other hand, I like them enough that I hesitate to take them apart and redo them for fear that they won't come out as well. Sometimes I just need to learn to leave well enough alone. Week 5-New Old Earrings

I made these earrings a couple of years ago with white pearls for the girls in my neice's wedding. The girls really liked them so I made some more to add to my low inventory of earrings, this time with different colored pearls. I call them my Bic earrings because I use a Bic lighter as a mandrel. Then I solder them, hammer them, and twist them. They're fun to wear because they spin a bit and catch the light from all angles.

New Tutorial-Enhanced Prong Set Gem Pendant

I finally finished a new tutorial. I've figured out that I wait so long between tutorials because MS Word gives me such a headache. This lesson teaches how to make consistently perfect prongs to set an 18x13mm oval faceted stone. You then create a beaded frame around the stone that is not only beautiful but solves the problem of faceted stones rolling from side to side when worn on the neck. Once mastered, the techniques can be used to set any size stone. The bail allows this to worn with even your largest omega chains. The finished size of the pendant is approximately 1 ½” tall by 1” wide. I now have it listed in my Artfire shop.
